Sigiriya rock circuit
Around the base of the fortress, tank bunds, and Pidurangala. A half day at an easy pace.
Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya and Dambulla) is the island's flattest cycling region and the one where a bike genuinely beats a car: the ancient cities are spread over kilometres of parkland you can ride straight through. It rides best from May to September and November to December.
The Cultural Triangle is the strongest argument for seeing Sri Lanka by bike rather than by van. Anuradhapura's sacred city sprawls across many square kilometres of forest, tank bunds, and ruins; Polonnaruwa's royal quadrangle is a linear archaeological park. Both were built at a scale that a car has to skirt around and a bicycle rides straight through.
The terrain is flat (this is the dry-zone plain, not the highlands), so the difficulty here is heat rather than gradient. Rides start early, finish by early afternoon, and the ancient irrigation tanks the kings built are still the best place to stop.
It is also the region where guiding earns its keep. The difference between riding past a heap of brick and understanding that you are looking at a 2,000-year-old stupa that was once among the tallest structures on earth is entirely down to who is riding next to you.
Flat riding, but the surfaces inside the archaeological parks are sand, gravel, and root-broken tarmac, which is why hardtail mountain bikes rather than road bikes are standard. Heat management matters more than gearing: early starts, and the support vehicle carries cold water all day.

Yes, it is the flattest region we ride and our Cultural Triangle tours are rated 1-2 out of 5. The challenge is heat, not terrain, so rides start at first light and finish by early afternoon.
Yes, and it is the best way to see both. The Anuradhapura sacred city covers several square kilometres of park roads, and the lanes and tank bunds around the base of Sigiriya are flat and quiet. A bike covers ground a car cannot enter.
May to September and November to December. The dry zone is on a different monsoon cycle to the south and west, so it stays rideable through the mid-year months when the coasts are wet. October is the month to avoid.
Site entry tickets for Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla are quoted separately, as they are set by the Central Cultural Fund and change periodically. Your tour quote lists exactly what is and is not included.
