Trincomalee to Nilaveli
An easy half day along the coast road, with Koneswaram at the start.
Sri Lanka's East Coast is the island's quietest cycling region: flat coastal roads with very little traffic between Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Arugam Bay. It rides best from May to September, exactly when the south and west coasts are under monsoon, which makes it the natural mid-year alternative.
The east is the part of Sri Lanka most visitors never reach, and for a cyclist that is the entire point. Roads are flat, wide, well-surfaced, and close to empty. You can ride for an hour and be passed by more cattle than cars.
It also solves a scheduling problem. From May to September the southwest monsoon makes the south coast and hill country wet, while the east sits in its dry season. If you can only travel mid-year, this is the region to ride.
The coastline is the draw: long empty beaches, lagoons full of birds, and fishing communities working the same waters they always have. Trincomalee has one of the finest natural harbours in the world; Arugam Bay is a world-class surf point that stays low-key out of season.
Flat and easy underfoot. The east is the region where riders most often ask for longer daily distances, because the roads are quiet enough to hold a rhythm for hours.

An easy half day along the coast road, with Koneswaram at the start.
Lagoon bunds, bridges, and fishing villages, almost entirely traffic-free.
Paddy fields, tanks, and elephant country inland from the surf point.
Deep natural harbour, Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock, and a compact old town.
Long white-sand beach north of Trinco, with Pigeon Island offshore.
Lagoon city: bridges, a Dutch fort, and the famous 'singing fish' lagoon.
Surf point at the southern end of the east coast; quiet lanes inland through paddy.
Shallow bay with calm water, and flat coastal roads either side.
National park at the far south of the east coast, known for its birdlife.
May to September. The east runs on the northeast monsoon cycle, so it is dry exactly when the south coast and hill country are wet. October and November are the months to avoid.
It is the quietest region on the island to ride. Traffic volumes are a fraction of the west and south, roads are wide and flat, and long coastal stretches have almost no vehicles at all.
Yes, and it is the most common pairing. Trincomalee is roughly three hours from Sigiriya, and both regions share the same May-September dry window, so a single trip can cover ancient cities and empty coast.
